Ernest Hemingwayan amazing writerrecognized for his mystifying ability to write simple yet awe inspiring conventional yet ground-breaking stories Hemingways most praised short story A Clean Well lighted Place epitomizes the type of existential nihilism his writing-style constitutes Existential nihilism is the scrutiny of the meaning or lack thereof of existence Through the thoughts and words of 3 characters at 3 completely different stages of their life Hemingway encapsulates the main theory of his existential viewpoint The underlying theme in A Clean Well Lighted Place is that life is inherently meaningless and leads inevitably to death and the older one gets the clearer these truths become and the less able one is to maintain any kind of positivity in ones outlook Hemingways incorporates the aforementioned theme into the short story through the use of 3 characters The first one is a displeased old man who is drinking himself to death because he has nothing to live for The second character is a middle aged man who sympathizes and empathizes with the old man The middle aged man understands the feeling of loneliness and the need to be surrounded by a pleasant light And lastly there is the young carefree waiter who thinks An old man is a nasty thing and doesnt realize he too will ultimately be old and alone In reality the theme of A Clean Well Lighted Place is nothingness The short story is about nothingness the way people are oblivious to it When living in a world that is meaningless how is someone who is completely alone how is heshe supposed to face the world How is heshe able to shun the feeling of nada or nothingness Hemingway not only relays this message through the character but he does by not identifying the men with names Because there is no plot Hemingway allows the audience to focus utterly on the texts significance that is in a world characterized by nothingness why
