Charlotte Brontes overall message about social class prejudice between how the poor and rich are viewed by others is that people should not be judged by their social class The interpretations of the Reeds the Ingrams and of Jane Eyre herself are different from each other The Reeds judge Jane by her social standing and abuse and disregard her to the point where she is left out The Ingrams are very arrogant towards anyone subordinate to them and insult Jane while Jane is in the room Finally Jane lost her parents and is reliant on the Reeds to give her nourishment and housing she has a corrupted view of the underprivileged and has a distinctive understanding of povertySince Jane has had to reside with Reeds they have been utterly cruel to her For example the Reeds have a rotten son named John Reed that tortured Jane in her childhood A perfect example of the abuse of John Reed is when he scolded her for reading a book You are a dependent mamma says you have no money your father left you none you ought to beg and not to live here with gentlemens children like us and eat the same meals we do He sees Jane as someone who needs his family to take money off of and that she is a waste of money He looks down upon her and thinks she is subordinate The other people in the Reed family are no less rude
