Shirley Jacksons Louisa Please Come Home is grounded around a character named Louisa Tether who is clever independent and selfish Many people may not see Louisa as a clever character however in the beginning of the story she plans to not leave any source of information behind Which is specified when she got to the train station she put on the raincoat of course she took off her light coat Shirley 49 Louisa is attempting to run away from her family but to fully leave everything behind she needs to make decisions that will prevent anyone from possibly tracking her down She tries to change her appearance by changing her clothing items By wearing the tan raincoat she is now invisible in the crowd because among the thousands of people a good number were wearing shapeless tan raincoats at the train station 49 She shows that she is clever by camouflaging herself to fit in into the crowd Although she is clever she is very independent throughout the short story Louisa leaves behind her family and starts a new life as Lois Taylor who lived on Primrose Street and worked down at the stationary 55 Louisa saved money 54 to be able to get a train ticket to a different city and adventure out She does not even inform her parents about leaving but simply takes some money goes to the train station and buys a ticket to a different town She goes to a city called Chandler where she gets a job and finds a stable environment where she can live She is young and working to earn money to pay back her tenant Mrs Peacock who is allowing Louisa to stay at her house This displays that Louisa does not rely on anyone but herself to take care of herself Conversely it results into her to display a selfish characteristic She leaves without giving a warning to her parents on the day before
