Mahatma Gandhi- lawyer and peace keeper- once said Hate the sin love the sinner In Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlett Letter The antagonizing story a woman who committed sin in Puritan community and live in the shadow of her sin with her daughter Pearl Despite Hester and Pearl had to live in the shadow of sin Dimmesdale lived in the life of guilt and terror because he is the father of Pearl that he never admitted until he got to his deathbed The sin was sickened out of him by his physician Hesters husband Roger Chillingworth that seeks revenge for what happened to his wife while he was gone But the shame Dimmesdale carried made him confess about what sin he has done and showed his family to the people that praised him so much Loyalty to the religious dogma and fear of public retribution collide together forcing Dimmesdale into a life of fear of exposure hypocrisy of his calling and failure of his responsibility to Hester and Pearl Dimmesdale constant fears of exposure made him sick and torture him This constant fear was due to not admitting his sin he has done with Hester His sickness has him torturing himself his torturing was gone through fast and vigil Hawthorne 146 The sickness over his exposure and being degraded from his rank in the Puritan community has him becoming sick Then again Dimmesdale feels chased and that the town will find out by saying The whole town will awake and hurry forth and find me here Hawthorne 172 While he is becoming sick he then is moved to live with Chillingworth at a widows house so the physician could always keep a closer look on his well-being This is where Dimmesdale started his misery and marking himself with his sin Dimmesdale hypocrisy over the course of the book decreases as he tried to dissimulate what he has done to Hester He at the
