The Story of an Hour is a short story by Kate Chopin who is known for addressing issues with womens roles in that time period she was one of the women to speak up about it before the feminist movement started Chopin has also experience the death of a spouse and embraces her independence kind of like the main character does in the Story of an Hour The short story is about Louise Mallard the protagonist and how she feels an unexpected freedom when she hears that her husband has died but it is taken away when he returns alive Her style in the story is simple and ironic because she doesnt use lengthy sentences and it right to the point and it is ironic because at the end the doctor said she died from joy that kills when she wasnt joyful to see her husband Chopin also uses a lot of symbolism and themes in the Story of an Hour One of the symbols that were seen in the story was Louises weak heart It represented how unhappy she was with her marriage and how she didnt feel free at all When she notice how free after they tell her about her husbands death she feels her heart starts to race and blood pumps through her veins When she dies at the end the doctor said that it was from joy but it was really the loss of that joy and her heart in a sense was broken Another symbol was the stairs when Louise went down the stairs the first time she find out her husband was death Then after when she wanted to be alone she went up the stairs and started to feel happy and free The last moment was when she head down the stairs with her sister and find him not died but alive and well then she died herself The open window was also a symbol it
