There are over 200000 people currently incarcerated in federal prison Statistics 2014 Why Prisons Dont Work by Wilbert Rideau discusses how the current prison system is essentially a mop-up operation Rideau 1994 meaning it does nothing to deter crime from happening but merely seeks to rid those who have broken the law from the rest of society I disagree with the authors thoughts that prisons dont work because I think that the punishment should fit the crime it is not societys responsibility to better a person and that age should not determine if you are safe to be released Former prisoner Wilbert Rideau thinks that the prisons do nothing to benefit society It is just generation after generation of people who are all alike unskilled impulsive and uneducated misfits Rideau 1994 The majority of them will be behind prison walls until they die which society think swill keep them safe He says implementing harsher laws has minimal impact on crime Rideau 1994 because it does nothing to stop the crime before it happens it looks only to punish the criminal in order to show potential criminals the ramifications Prison does serve its importance in keeping the public safe yet its main goal should be to house young lawbreakers for the timespan it takes to let them age a bit and get a handle on their impulsivity A stint in prison should be a temporary one not a way of life Rideau 1994 People who are kept in prison too long basically come to see the prison culture as the normal way of life and come to embrace the lifestyle Rideau does say that he believes certain offenders do belong in the prison infinitely but that they are the exception not the norm Most prisoners enter at a young age but after years of imprisonment they no longer threaten society He thinks that instead of building new prisons the money should be put towards catching younger
