A persons psychological makeup determines his or her perceptions attitudes and actions In Robert Brownings dramatic monologue My Last Duchess a sixteenth century Duke is attempting to secure the count of Astrias niece as his new bride because he had his last Duchess a young rather naive woman killed Before he has her killed however he commissions the artist Fra Pandolf to paint her portrait capturing the look that disturbs the Duke The portrait is on one of the walls in the upper chambers of his palatial home and behind the curtain which only he can draw While he shows the portrait to the envoy he discusses his last wife and in doing so he reveals his rather unsavory nature The Dukes pride arrogance and controlling nature his misreading of his last Duchess and his commission portrait of her reveal the Dukes preference for the portrait over the living duchess Pride arrogance and controlling nature explain the Dukes desire for the portrait over the living duchess The Duke is a controlling man by saying since none puts by The curtain I have drawn for you but I 9-10 The Duke admits that no one is allowed to view at the portrait without his approval After reading this statement one can observe that the Duke is controlling by not letting anyone look at the image without his consent The Duke declares that his wife should be thankful of his gift of nine hundred-years-old-name 33 The Duke believes his family name made him admirable to the duchess and that she needs to overwhelmed over the name he gave her The Duke shows pride and control by making this statement because he is proud of his family name and that he wants his wife to be thankful of the gift he gave her The dukes failure to control his wife aggravates him and he confesses This grew I gave commands Then all smiles
