Antigone and Ismene are sisters who claim that they would both bury their brothers after he fights In this Greek play Antigone by Sophocles Ismene doesnt stay true to her word while Antigone tries her best to keep her work even if it leads to death King Creon also issues a decree that makes it illegal to bury people from this war The sisters argue back and forth about whether they should bury Polynices or not Antigone and Ismene have a completely different personality which is clearly shown with the circumstances that approach them Antigone calls Ismene aside to have a word with her Ismene replies to Antigone questioning her about the death of their brothers by saying We two sisters were robbed of our two brothers both dying the same day by doubled hand Sophocles 11-13 Ismene realizes that her brothers have died but she also sees that something else is troubling her sister Antigone explains to Ismene why she is upset Indeed For of our two brothers Creon gives honorable burial to one but dishonors the other Sophocles 20-23 Ismene thinks that helping to bury Polynices will only cause more issues Antigone continues to explain the decree that King Creon has recently put into effect Then Antigone tries to get to the point Will you share in the labor and the deed Sophocles 42 Ismene cant make a connection with Antigone of why Antigone wants to bury Polynices Antigone wants to keep her word and follow what the god Zeus would want her to do by burying him Ismene thinks that it would be better to let the birds eat him then it would than to lose her own life for burying him Antigone and Ismene are characterized differently because Antigone wants to do what she knows is right while Ismene wants to follow the powerful men that were put in charge of herIsmene basically tries to play it off like nothing
