Most people arent born heroes they have to work at it Aftersoul-searching and discovering who one is a person can start to becomea hero In this novel a young solider grows and overcomes hischallenges to be a man In the war based novel The Red Badge ofCourage by Stephen Crane Henry the protagonist of the novel fillsthe description of a hero by growing and maturing by seeing hisfaults and admitting them to himself by becoming a man Crane creates ahero by starting with a boy and ending with a manA hero is someone who risks things whose courageous and is humbleThey might not be distinctly Homeric but there seemed to be much gloryin them Crane 3 In the first part of the novel Henry craves to go bein the army the war is dragging him in its path as the scent of freshpie draws one to the kitchen He wants to go in to the army to getattention girls and pride to be a hero They had thronged abouthim with wonder and admiration He had felt the gulf now between themand had swelled with calm pride Crane 6 The crowds of people in thearmy that are leaving to go to base are being showered with smiles andcomplements which is what draws Henry to the army After a shaky startenlisting in the army Henry is reassured by his actions due to thereaction of the crowd The way Crane portrays his character in the novelchanges throughout it Cranes illustrations of Henry in the first couple battles of war arevery unheroic As he perceived this fact it occurred to him that he hadnever wished to come to the war He had not enlisted of his free willHe had been dragged by the merciless government Crane 21 Due to hisself- dissatisfaction he blames the world for his problems instead ofdoing the mature thing and owning up to it His actions at this point inthe novel show that Henry Fleming
