Nobody wants to be a coward No matter where someone is from how they are raised or what they believe in nobody ever wants to say they are scared of someone or something Looking back throughout history the greatest leaders specifically war leaders have always demonstrated courage confidence power and a lack of fear Tim OBrien uses these qualities to depict how a perfect soldier should act and present him or herself OBrien writes a series of stories such as The Dentist which describes Curt Lemons ordeal with the army dentist or OBriens own fear of bringing shame to his family OBrien also emphasizes how significant a soldiers reputation is especially while they are still in the military In the process of writing The Things They Carried OBrien successfully reveals the soldiers mindset and beliefs specifically how fear is a sign of weakness Going to war is not an easy task especially being forced against your own will Imagine you have been recently accepted into Harvard and have an extremely bright future ahead of yourself This is the internal conflict OBrien is faced with in the story On The Rainy Rain where hes utterly shocked after receiving his draft notice OBrien doesnt know what to do he feels as though he is too good for this war OBrien 41 and he wasnt eager to fight a war he hated OBrien 40 Even though OBrien is afraid to go to war he is even more afraid of exile and of losing the respect of his parents OBrien 45 Deciding to finally run away from his military duty he flees to Canada but he eventually comes back I survived but its not a happy ending I was a coward I went to the war OBrien 61 This quote explains how if OBrien had fled permanently due to his fear of fighting in the military he would have been seen as a weak coward back at home OBrien
