In Candide Voltaires main character eventually begins to see through the flawed reasoning he was taught and begins to view the world for what it really is central idea Candide sets out on a journey to attain a balance between irrational ideas and reality He searches for meaning in the travels and people he encounters He eventually is able to see the absurdity of mindless optimism Voltaire is able to accomplishe this with the use of setting symbolism and tone which eventually changes Candides outlook on life theses Throughout the novel Voltaire employs the element of setting to signify the importance of distorted societal values Candide grows up in beautiful castle in Westphalia he is a young man of suspicious birth Voltaire begins with this setting so he can expose the warped values that are related to social status Candide believes that this is the best castles in the best of all possible worlds Candide didnt keep this state of mind for long Candide is banished from his beautiful castle only to end up on the streets cold and hungry Another setting Voltaire uses to signify societal values is when Candide encounters two Bulgarians They enlist him in their army He is naive and does not understand much so because of misunderstandings he is beaten Candide witnesses all the barbarism committed The world was based not fate and situations do not occur because it was meant to The earthquake that destroyed Lisbon sets the stage for Voltaire to demonstrate the uselessness of the philosophers arguments Candides optimistic teacher finds the young man badly injured and covered with stones from the earthquake Rather than help Candide Pangloss merely offers scientific speculation This is the first time Candide ever questions his mentor For exampleThis concussion of the earth is no new thing answered PanglossThe city of Lima in America experienced the same convulsions lastyear the same cause the same effects there is certainly a train ofsulphur
