Rome Environment In the Italian peninsula it has the same climate as the Mediterranean climate Mild rainy winters and hot dry summers The climate in the north is cooler rain is plentiful Italian peninsula is an ideal place for farming Romans grew olives grapes and wheat The city of Rome has tremendous environmental advantages because of that it made it easier for Rome to become an important city The city of Rome is located the first place people could come when they crossed the Tiger river so it is the natural location of the main north-south road in Italy There are important salt flats near the city of Rome because salt is so important in the ancient world As Romans expanded their empire they encountered many different environments The Roman army had to learn different ways of fighting ways of conquering different areas During the period of the Roman Empire 100 BC to 500 AD Romans had environmental advantage of controlling the Mediterranean Sea Also another advantage is getting foods and materials from lots of different environments You could get tin from England wood from Germany cotton from Egypt and silver from Spain Romans have many advantages as I listed above that is why the lived for many years Occupation Romans started off as farmers and shepherds They never lost the love of simplecountry life In the spring farmers prepared field strips using heavy flows pulled by an Oxen They planted by seeds by hand They tools farmers used were iron spades hoes wooden rakes for cutting grass they have knifes for cutting wheat called sickles and scythes Even though they have knifes they invented a wheat cutting machine called Vallus A vallus is a 2-weeled cart pushed by a horse or mule Farmers took crops from Asia and the Mediterranean all over Europe They were also Roman doctors They relied on a mixture of common
