Animals have always been a part of our daily lives Today as in the past despite our incredible scientific advances we still depend on them for food clothing labor entertainment companionship transportation and laboratory experimentation According to author Amy Achor seven billion animals are killed every year in the United States the majority six billion for food alone 4 Today the demand for mass-produced food and products have created industries that exploit animals and natural environments in ways unimaginable even one hundred years ago when people still farmed mainly for their families or small communities Todays so-called factory farms fast food and frozen food industries clothing retailers and manufacturers zoos pet industries exotic animal importers and exporters and research laboratories have by their practices called into question our relationship to animals and our environmentToday animal rights activists and organizations conservationists environmentalists and even philosophers believe that animals deserve and have a right to be treated with respect as living beings no less than any human being According to Achor All animals human and nonhuman are unique expressions of life that have inherent value for no reason other than the fact that they exist Animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain and suffering As such they have the right to not be intentionally subjected to unnecessary pain They have the right to live their lives without exploitation or undue interference 13-14 For Achor the aim of the animal rights movement is to motivate human society to recognize itself as part of a larger society 14 and to establish a basic code of ethics which guides the treatment of all animal beingsa code of behavior that optimally benefits all members of the society 9 For Achor this code of ethics is not to be based so much on kindness towards to animals but for equal consideration of them 9In the case of factory farms industry practices are indisputably shocking Chickens for example are jammed into small
