Early Frances H Staking Her Claim Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Transgressive Woman Warrior Journal of Popular Culture 353 2001 11-27 Web 16 Aug 2013 This article by Frances Early attempts to show the ways in which the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer uses a subversion of traditional gender roles in order to expose the central theme of thedanger of ignorance and of oppressive patriarchal power structures The article is written with a feminist approach Early argues against the notion that Buffy is simply a compensatory fantasy for young women whose depiction only strengthens traditional gender stereotypes and shows the ways in which traditionally masculine imagery is used in conjunction with traditionally feminine traits to develop a character that Early describes as a partly androgynous citizen ideal that urges its audience to challenge the patriarchal idea of gender roles making it different and more revolutionary than the mythic and historic tradition ofthedisruptive woman warrior hero The idea that Buffys character contains both masculine and feminine attributes is explored primarily through examples in which she resolves conflict through the use of both violence and compassion This is further supported by an insight into the directorial intentions of Joss Whedon Owen Susan A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vampires Postmodernity and Post-feminism Journal of Popular Film Television 272 199924-31 Web 17 Aug 2013 The article explores the ways in which Buffy the Vampire Slayer is able to challenge societal norms and mainstream values by looking at the series with a postmodern and feminist approach It ultimately concludes that although the series effectively challenges what Owen calls the failed grand narratives of middle America which include issues such as family and the justice system through its use of irony and the manipulation of various postmodern elements present throughout the series However the author is unable to fully determine whether or not the show can be considered to be challenging in its
