Arlene McKinney Trevors mother is very independent and tough Shesgot several conflicts in her life though Shes had a rough life lacksin judgement with men is battling alcoholism and is not sure how shefeels about Reuben or Trevor trying to set them up Ricky Trevorsfather is always in the back of Arlenes mind and shes constantlywondering when hes going to come back Shes also a recoveringalcoholic and her sponsor Bonnie checks up on her making sure shedoesnt drink since shes surrounded by alcohol at one of her jobs With all of her issues she remains a very capable woman though I thinkshe changes from the beginning to the end of the bookBefore she met Reuben she had been in a really rough spot Rickywhod cheated on his wife Cheryl with Arlene wasnt in her life and shewas constantly wondering when he was going to be back She was a singlemother who was working two jobs On top of that she was trying to staysober when one of her jobs included being around alcohol When shewasnt working she often saw other men and would compare them to Rickyall the men she liked had a similar sort of personality At thebeginning she was obsessive over Ricky but she later realized that hewasnt everything After Arlene met Ruben I think she was a little confused because shewasnt used to a guy who treated her decently Her whole life shedbeen used to guys who would treat her like crap so I think it wasstrange to her that he was a good man I think thats why Trevor wantedto set them up He saw past Reubens scars and really didnt care aboutthat Trevor only saw the good in people I also think therelationship between Arlene and Trevor changes throughout the story too Where at the beginning of the story she seems a little annoyed with himand
