While I was working as a GS-07 full-time person for the 2079th ReserveForces School in Richmond VA we received an instruction request fromthe 29th Light Infantry Division The 29th Division had been activated5 October 1985 at Ft Belvoir VA They were requesting us to retrain350 National Guard soldiers from various Military OccupationalSpecialties MOS to Infantry 11BAs a Military School we were authorized to employ one Instructor forevery ten students that we trained Wow that would be thirty-five newInstructors A School would rarely move an Instructor from a class thatwas already being taught to a new class unless there were not anyInstructors with the MOS skills available to teach That meant we wouldbe able to acquire an additional 35 instructors As we did not have any Infantry Instructors available within school Isuggested to the LTC of our Northern Region that we employ the olderDrill Sergeants that could no longer do the forced march requirement inour Infantry training The suggestion was given a Go ahead by theDivision Commander We published a notice that we were interviewing for the InfantryInstructor positions Several Drill Sergeants from the 1st and 4th Bdesapplied for the Instructor positionsIn our first meeting with all the projected Infantry Instructors theLTC explained that we would be writing the POI Program of Instructionfrom scratch and creating our own training aidsThe 1st Bde Drill Sergeants said Thats an impossible task The 4th Bde Drill Sergeants who stated that they did not think it wasany different than the normal situations said So whats new Werarely receive any support and we have to design most of the items weuse to teach Infantry now I started my Reserve career in 4th Bde and knew that those Sergeantswere extremely creative with their Instruction I had no knowledge ofwhat the 1st Bde Drill Sergeants did or did not perform prior to joiningour school We divided the Ft Benning Infantry Training POI among allof the Infantry Training Team Each of
