How has the Internet expanded in the latter half of the 20th century and what is Australias role in this emerging technology Fifty years ago no one had heard of the Internet or even dreamed that one day the world would be able to communicate with each other via a computer The invention of the Internet as we know it today changed the way that people view and obtain information The Internet is a global computer network connecting millions and millions of users throughout the world It is a vast network of computers and other mini-networks all linked together so that everyone can find information purchase products or meet new people It is easily assessable from home for anyone that has a computer and a modem or at a local library It has made a huge impact in Australia since its introduction to the public and now some people cannot see life without it Businesses as well as the general public have been effected It is also relatively new considering it was just about 10 years ago that it was made public and easily accessible to everyone thorough online services The Internet first came about in the mid 1960s The government needed a way to communicate information between tanks and headquarters so the ARPA Advanced Research Projects Agency sought a way to let signals from the battlefield reach a headquarters computer using satellites and radio signals When it first started ARPAnet was mainly used for military business but soon scientists began to use it to work on research They formed a small network ARPANET which also was intended to promote the sharing of super-computers amongst researchers in the United States It was designed to allow scientists to share data and access remote computers Scientists built ARPANET with the intention of creating a network that would still be able to function efficiently if part of the network was damaged This concept was important
