Binge drinking on college campuses is a commonly over looked problem The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention conducted a survey in 1999 to study this problem Approximately 17600 students attending 140 four-year colleges and universities returned the surveys According to the study the overall total of college binge drinkers was 44 percent This study defined binge drinking as having five or more drinks in a row for males and four or more drinks in a row for females A drink was defined as a 12-ounce alcoholic beverage a four-ounce glass of wine or a shot of liquor Even though the overall number of college binge drinkers was 44 percent not all colleges in the study had a high binging rate Some colleges had a one percent binge drinking rate However the highest rate was 70 percent and at nearly one-third of the colleges more than half the students were binge drinkers About half the binge drinkers were frequent binge drinkers This study defined frequent binge drinking as binge drinking three or more times in the two weeks prior to the survey Among these frequent binge drinkers 61 percent of the men and 39 percent of the women drank alcohol on ten or more occasions in the past 30 days According to the study a high school binge drinker is up to three times more likely to binge drink in college Also students who are Caucasian involved in athletics a resident of a fraternity or sorority or said religion was is not very important were more likely to binge drink The study also concluded that the majority of students even those who were classified under frequent binge drinkers didnt admit to having an alcohol problem Only three percent of frequent binge drinkers had ever sought help for alcohol abuse Two-tenths of one percent of the total sample including only six-tenths of one percent of frequent binge drinkers classified themselves
