Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X By LISA JONES When these two men were born no one would have imagined the impact they would have on the lives of people Malcolm X was born on May 19 1925 and about four years later Martin Luther King Jr was born January 15 1929 Both men were the sons of Baptist preachers Although Malcolm and King advocated equal rights and they were both assassinated their lives started out totally opposed Malcolm X life stared out rocky He was taking from his mother at the age of six and placed in a foster home After the eighth grade Malcolm dropped out of school and headed for a life of crime By the age of twenty-one he was in prison for burglary While in prison he adapted the teaching of Elijah Muhammad leader of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam Malcolm adopted X as his last name which is a symbol for a stolen identity Six years later Malcolm was released form prison Later he became a minister of Temple No 7 in Harlem NY His speeches on racism and his advocacy of self-defense evoked admiration as well as fear Martin Luther King Jr life was the opposed King earned his B A degree at Morehouse College Atlanta Georgia a B D degree at Croser Theological Seminary Chester Pennsylvania and a PhD degree at Boston University Boston Massachusetts He began preaching at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery Alabama Kings involvement with the civil rights movement began when Mrs Rosa Parks refuse to give up her seat to a white person From that moment on he has joined together people of all races and ethnic backgrounds peaceful by holding nonviolence rallies Although their goals were the same the means in which to achieve them were different Malcolm believed in any means necessary and King believed in peaceful rallies and equal rights for
