Can Democracy and Empire Co exist If a country maintains an empire there would be conflict with their democratic ideals The Athenians tried to maintain a democracy but they fail to do this because they tried to take over another country The Athenians used force to get what they wanted The citizens ruled the Athenian democracy They formed an assembly The assembly contained freeborn males over thirty The Athenians sailed to Argos with twenty ships and seized 300 hundred Argives This shows that Athenian democracy uses force instead of reasoning Another example would be when the Athenians invaded the island of Melos and gave the Melians two choices join them and be slaves or Athenians will kill them and force them to be slaves This is not democratic because the Athenians did not give the Melians a choice but to become slaves It is wrong for a country that was maintaining a democracy and tried to force other people to do what they do not want to do The democracy of the Athenian and the United States are much alike The United States use bribery like techniques The United States maintains a democracy The United States democracy today has political parties and the citizens are able to choose among the candidates in an election The examples of why the US democracy is wrong is that the United States helps a country in need only if that country will join them and do what the US government want them to do When the refugees in Kosovo needed help the United States agree but only under one condition they have to do what the US wants them to do The democracy in the US gives the people more choices because they get to vote on what they want and do but sometimes their democracy is wrong and they do not reason but proceed with force Another example of Democracy going wrong was again done
