Carvers personal battle with alcoholism had a great impact on his writings In the story The Cathedral alcohol is used to shield the problems that the main character is facing much in the same way Carver had done in his own life Carver had used his own frustration in life jealousy and consumption of alcohol as a basis for the main character in The CathedralEven at a young age Carvers life had been a very complicated one Carvers family had faced many financial hardships his mother even had helped supplement the familys income by getting a job as a waitress and by working in retail These hardships had made Carvers father turn to alcohol to deal with the stress of life Frank was known for a big appetite and drinking binges His fathers own battle with alcoholism led to his eventual death at the age of fifty-threeAlcohol can be said to have been the one constant thing throughout Carvers life Carver himself had started drinking as early as his junior year of high school CR was a teenager then drinking right along with the older men His friends and him would get some beer play poker and listen to music for hours Carver had gotten married and had a couple of children In the beginning of his life had been going much the same way that his fathers life had been He faced financial hardships an unstable marriage Carvers minimum wage jobs demands of parenting and a need for money lead him to turn to alcohol to deal with his problems Eventually full time drinking became a serious pursuit of CarversCarvers use of alcohol had been a destructive path that he had followed just like his father He had been hospitalized and nearly died from issues that had come from his heavy drinking Carver had eventually found his path in life through AA and was able to quit drinking He was able to reach into
