In Romeo and Juliet Friar Lawrence is a character who makes limited appearances but takes up an important role in the play Friar Lawrence is a priest or Friar if you will of a church He takes a special role in the love story of the two lovers Romeo and Juliet He was responsible for the marriage that was supposed to take place This role is what gives Friar Lawrence a significant presence in Romeo and JulietAlthough this role is unusual and not one that seems important compared to the big stars of the play Friar Lawrences role and his character in general has tremendous importance This is because without his character the love story would be impossible He functions in the play by being a big help to the two main characters When Juliet fakes her death he took it upon himself to lie and say that her funeral should be arranged He also helped her by arranging the meeting with Romeo He took the role of helping both parties express their love for each other safely and completely These actions of his led to the climax of the story if he didnt complete them then there would be no such possible climaxFriar Lawrence does affect the theme of the play in a large way In a story of love despair and death he was partly responsible for all three He says O Juliet I already know thy grief It strains me past the compass of my wits I hear thou must and nothing may porogue it on Thursday next be married to this county Act 4 sc 1 pg 181 In this passage he explains that he already understands Juliets feelings but nothing will stop her marriage to Paris This clearly portrays that even though Romeo and Juliet were a part of two different parties Friar Lawrence accepted their love for each otherFriar Lawrence definitely does affect the development of other characters He
