Jonathan Livingston Seagull encounters many different characters with important roles that have different ideas and beliefs These characters include Jonathan Fletcher Chiang and many members of the flock There are also many concepts that accompany these beliefs throughout this novel Jonathan and Fletcher were similar in many ways however they also had many differences Both Jonathan and Fletcher were eager to learn Jonathan had learned many things throughout the course of his life alone When he met Chiang The Great Gull he was eager to learn his skills and become an apprentice He did not understand his concept of his body being an unlimited idea of freedom but later on he understood the idea of what Chiang was teaching him When Fletcher met Jonathan he was very eager to learn from him He also did not understand the concept of his body being an unlimited idea of freedom until later Both Jonathan and Fletcher were outcasts in the eyes of their flock however Fletcher was vengeful while Jonathan was planning on enlightening others of his teachings Jonathan was cast away for attempting to perfect his flying Fletcher was cast away because he did a barrel roll around the elder seagull Jonathans motivation to do better was because of his pursuit of a higher learning of flying and a better understanding of what he was about and who he was That was his main concern Fletcher on the other hand felt he had been harshly treated and he wanted to show the ones that outcast him how superior he was He wanted to make them sorry for making him an outcast but he soon met up with Jonathan and he asked him if he was ready to accept his flocks faults and become his apprentice and later on assist in the teachings of the exact flock that made him an outcast and Fletcher accepted Despite being outcasts by their flock Jonathan and Fletcher went back
