Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress an autobiographical novel written by the viewpoint of a third person the narrator unfolds its story in the Cultural Revolution era in China Three main characters Luo the Little Chinese Seamstress and the narrator are sent to a village to be re-educated as traditional cultural and western values are being challenged by the Chinese Cultural Revolution in 1970s that enforces communism in the country During their journey to the re-education the main characters face conflicts between western values and traditional values as they seek western values by looking for western goods Yet the way the narrator and Luo deal with situations in human relationships in the village and how they express what their values differ depending on their individual character traits the narrator is a cautious passive character whereas Luo is an active passionate and progressive character Also the Seamstresss character becomes a progressive character as stepping toward a new valueFirstly in the novel Luo and the narrator show different aptitude in dealing with sensitive social issues depending on their own innate dispositions The narrator is self-conscious about being offended by his opponents whereas Luo is dauntless in that regardFor instance in the first chapter the narrator and Luo have a conversation with a village headman who keeps traditional values against western values about western composer Mozart whose value has been challenged by the Chinese society When the headman of the village forcefully asking questions to Luo and the narrator about what is the violin the narrator becomes cautious about having the socially sensitive topic because of the violin from western culture that is opposing to Chef Maos idea while Luo is bold enough to talk about Mozart and encouraging the narrator to play a Mozarts song by a violin Luo is about to talk about dangerous western culture easily in front of the headman What you are about to hear comrade is a Mozart sonata Then the
