It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies but just as much to stand up to our friends JK Rowling The act of standing up for yourself can be very difficult whether it is against someone you love hate or even a little bit of both Intimidation is the reason some people do not stand up for themselves because it may ruin strong relations or how it might physically or emotionally harm them In the novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker the protagonist named Celie has to make the decision of telling her abusive and powerful husband Albert how she really feels or to hold it in and bottle up all of her stress and anger inside herself Personally I have had many encounters where I spoke up against someone to protect myself andor others from being harmed Standing up for yourself is a very effective way to protect yourself and others from conflicts such as being bullied walked upon or unreasonably controlledI feel that The Color Purple accurately represents the theme I have obtained as it also relates to my personal experiences Most people today do not like to be pushed around or always told what to do but they are still trapped doing what they do not want to do because they have not spoken up for themselves to truly express their opinions and beliefs For example in The Color Purple Celie becomes fed up with Albert and the imbalance of power he is causing in her life Albert has an unfair advantage over Celie because she does not express her true feelings to him Celie refrains from expressing her feelings to Albert as she is not emotionally strong enough to stand up to him She is scared of him and all of the things he does to her Fortunately for Celie her best friend Shug Avery assists her in gaining confidence to stand up
