The text that I will be analysing is Kate Grenvilles novel The Secret River This novel adopts characterisation and narrative structure to convey notions about the colonisation of Australia in the early eighteen hundreds Beginning with narrative structure this novel is structured in chronological order except for the first chapter Strangers Grenville has split the story up into parts based on the geographic location I also noted that she has used a diaryjournal theme The effect of the first chapter Strangers is to establish the conflict and exemplify the tone of the story In the first chapter it is evident that the conflict is an anticipated violent confrontation between an Aboriginal man and Thornhill This creates the idea of rivalry and disagreement between the settlers and natives in the colonisation era suggesting that the colonisation was uneasy and strikes the question with reference to the chapter name who is the stranger to this land The incensed tone reinforces this concept Damn your eyes be off and Go to the devil are examples The chronological structure split up based on places is important because it depicts the significance of location in the colonisation period The diary theme of the story is apparent with the tildes separating segments of the text and how its written from Wills point of view this creates a time reference and reminder of when this colonisation occurred Similarly the characterisation consolidates the ideas about colonisation Grenvilles diverse choice of character dialogue conjures historic references and creates picturesque imaginary images of objects characters and the landscape The backgrounds of most of the English settlers appear to be tough and uneasy in particular Will and Sal whose backgrounds mostly consisted of hunger poverty and felonies The characters are also represented by their actions from what I have observed they make poor decisions and actions if conflict arises This can be based after Will Smasher Saggity and the others evoke a war on the
