In Charles C Manns article What If We Never Run Out of Oil he discusses some thoughts on the oil industrys past present and future Thoughts such as the worlds access to oil the environmental effects of obtaining oil and the possibly never ending supply of petroleumTechnology is constantly improving allowing the world the gain access to more oil more easily Mann 2 Technology specifically in the most recent decades has been advancing increasingly fast Advancing technology allows us greater access to current energy sources - such as crude oil and natural gases and also allows us to discover more energy sources which are not only more effective but also more abundant The fracking of shale gas is one example which is becoming more frequent in the oil industry Another source of petroleum called methane hydrate which can be found in the arctic and also beneath the sea floor is also a good example of this There are vast deposits of it on the planet approximately twice as much as all other fossil fuels combined Mann 4 Despite only about one percent of the planets methane hydrate deposits being in the accessible arctic there is still such a great amount that even a small proportion is still a significant amount and eventually the undersea deposits will be accessible on a global scale Mann 3 These newly acquired and more ample sources of petroleum with the help of advanced technology could provide more countries which were previously dependent on others for oil with the opportunity to become energy independent Mann 4The environmental impact of fossil fuels on the planet is immense Because of this shale gas and methane hydrate are becoming attractive substitutes for their coal and crude oil counterparts Companies have to burn fuel in order to obtain more fuel Mann 2 EROEI is the ratio of energy returned on energy input which determines how energy efficient different types of petroleum are to access
