Charles Wesley through his hymns and evangelizing helped make the Methodist Church grow negatively and positively Though he caused some controversy within the Church he still assisted the church in growth He was born in December 18 1708 and was one of the eight children of Susanna Wesley and Rev Samuel Wesley Stevens 36 60 He grew up in a very strict Protestant home Several of the rules they had to abide by were that drinking and eating between meals was never allowed unless in case of sickness which seldom never happened They went to bed at eight in the evening His mother taught each of her child a strong and rational foundation of religious education Samuel Wesley was often living in continuous debt he was even imprisoned for it The Wesley family lived in poverty much of their life until they lived on their own His father Samuel Wesley on his deathbed in April of 1735 he told his son Charles Be steady the Christian faith will surely revive in this kingdom you will see it though I shall not Stevens 51 Charles Wesley attended Westminster school and at eighteen he was elected to Christ Church College Oxford On April 8th 1749 Charles married Sarah Gwynn Clifford When people hear about the name Wesley they generally imagine John Wesley right away However Charles Wesley impacted the Methodist Church both musically and evangelically Without Charles there may have never been a Methodist movement or a very different kind of movement might have occurred As a college student Charles was often skeptical of starting a movement at Oxford since it was a scandalous place yet it was here the birth place of a new found movement Methodism Eighteenth century Oxford was an excellent place for wanting religious training even though it was an expensive place However Oxford was also known throughout Europe as a party school where students and dons alike devoted most of their energies
