Vaccines have saved life for years in the United States Vaccinations allow for children to build immunity before they are exposed to a virus Once antigens are build up in the body from fighting off a weakened virus in a vaccine then when and if a person is exposed to the illness they are prepared to fight if off early Vaccinations for Children 2004 Debate about whether vaccinations are helpful or harmful has gone on for years Chickenpox or varicella-zoster virus in the past has been responsible for many deaths and hospitalizations The chickenpox vaccine or Varivax became issued in the US in 1995 Vzquez et al 2001 It is a weakened form of the virus injected normally at infancy Originally developed in Japan the vaccine is still viewed with skepticism Vzquez et al 2001 Some parents believe vaccinating their children for chickenpox is not worth the risks It is more beneficial to get vaccinated for chickenpox than to build natural immunity Varicella can cause many complications in children and adults Some complications are infection pneumonia and encephalitis Johannes 2011 Varivax vaccine can lower or even prevent complications from happening Since the use of this vaccine death rates have fallen dramatically from 105 a year in 1990 to two deaths in 2008 Johannes 2011 Multiple studies have found that the benefit gained through vaccination is well worth the rare chance of any setbacks occurring due to associations with the vaccine With vaccination a patient may experience a milder viral infection with less than fifty blisters compared to hundreds Also normally only one out of ten immunized will contract the virus Coffin 2013 The vaccine has proved to be highly efficient in protection against the virus but will need to be continuously studies to better the results Hambleton and Gershon 2005 Furthermore studies have been done to estimate the effectiveness of this vaccine including observation of patients over time review of medical histories average effectiveness
