Why CollegeMy whole life I have heard people say that I should go to college so one day I can get a good job When I was a child my parents always told me I had to go to college or I would not have future Following high school that is exactly what I did I attended my local community college with hopes of one day transferring to a university In 2006 I decided to take a break from school not knowing what I really wanted to do so I joined the Navy I figured coming from a small town and never being on a plane the Navy would give me the opportunity to venture outside the norm explore the world and decide exactly where I wanted to live and what to study On one hand some argue that going to college is the only way to get a good job and support a family This career education stereotype seems to suggest that shortcuts are available to students that lead directly to higher paying jobs On the other hand Charles Murray argues that There has never been a time in history when people with skills not taught in college have been in so much demand at such high pay as today236 I disagree with Charles Murrays view that skills not taught in college have been in so much demand because as recent research has shown on average the higher the educational attainment of a worker the higher are his or her earnings The largest increase by far occurs with the completion of a university degree On average there are advantageous economic returns for increased levels of education Returns to baccalaureate degrees surpass returns to associate degrees and those with an occupational certificate equivalent to two semesters of full-time study have higher earnings than those with just some college but no degree Grubb 2002 Marcotte Bailey Borkoski Kienzl 2005In sum then the issue is
