Fresh out of the eighth grade and I began a new chapter of my life alone at the age of fourteen At fourteen my parents booked a plane ticket for one to Houston Texas With a bright future out in front of me I left my parents and two sisters behind I moved to Houston with dreams of hoopn professionally A week before my freshmen year in high school I moved from Somersworth New Hampshire to Houston Texas and moved in with my half-sister to start a new chapter of my life It began with a question from my sister riding to her house from the Hobby airport My sister said Will you be ok sleeping on the couch My friend Kim will stay with us for a while I replied Yes no problem Later on that evening it came time to sleep and my sister threw me a couple of blankets and a pillow and we both called it a night The moment I laid on that couch I felt like a teeter totter a playground toy I used to play on as a little boy One half of my body lay down and the other up and I felt my feet dangling off the end of the old saggy couch I fought all night to find a comfortable position to sleep in although the couch caused me pain it became a blessing in disguise because it brought my nephew and I closer together Five days later I woke up to an uneasy feeling that reminded me the first day of high school had come I felt anxious like a starting pitcher right before game seven of the World Series My sister said I think this high school will come as a culture shock to you With those
