Barbie Doll is a poem by Marge Piercy that tells readers that society has an effect on peoples self-esteem particularly that of women Barbie Doll shows how girls are seen and treated from the time they are born The main character is a young girl who like most girls is given typical toys that babies grow up to play with such as a dolls The same can be said for Lindsay Lohans character Cady Heron in Mean Girls This character is similar to the character in the poem in many ways but one ends in sadness while one end in happiness cause by peer pressure The poem and movie suggest the falsity and destructiveness of our standards of female beauty that have led to many lives The poem Barbie Doll repeats a big nose and fat legs because society nowadays is so focused on outer beauty it does not consider inner beauty Piercy line 6 The girl in the poem was healthy and intelligent until she changed herself to conform into what society thinks of beauty Rebecca Catalanello argues that school employees must detect and take seriously any bullying complaintsCatalanello par 6 Shes addressing the issues of how kids are scared to tell school employees about how other kids judged them by way they look the way they dress and the ways they are being treated In Mean Girls Cady Heron felt the same feelings that the character in Barbie Doll felt She initially is innocent having grown up away from peers her own age in Africa After being home schooled for most of her life by parents who traveled all around the world Cady is finally getting a chance to enter a real high school with real teenager her age Just like the character in Barbie Doll she is judged by the way she looks because the image she has doesnt fit the looks of her peers Both characters are judged based on
