Elizabeth Barret Browning came from a prosperous Victorian family from whom her father was perceived as an authoritarian Victorian father that was convinced from his reading of the Bible that he was in fact the sole judge of what was right for his family Thus she was isolated from most of the outside world due to the nature of her autocratic father Timko 302 Robert Browning from a contrasting social structure was from a lower class family and because of this distinct difference of their social caste system her father vehemently disapproved of the two entering into holy matrimony Despite being raised by a patriarchal father it did not stop her from being a domineering young girl who had a thirst for knowledge She did not have a formal education as such her brother who had attained his from a private school but made up for her lack of formal education by being a Voracious reader and striving to learn Greek and Latin Her early poetry serious and learned reflects this domination her father encouraged her to write poetry and called her the poet laureate of Hope End Timko 302 A majority of the sonnets that she wrote reflected the themes closer to her own life especially those of thwarted love frustrated lovers and rarely love finally consummated Timko 302 In addition to passion being a primary influence on her writing she suffered from an illness at the age of fifteen from what is now recognized as a nervous breakdown Brought about by the departure from home of her brother to whom she had been very close to in her youth Timko 302 Now on the contrasting side Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American Transcendentalist writer who was born in 1803 to a Conservative Unitarian Minister Woodlief 1 He was a middle son that no one expected anything from yet went on to the Harvard Divinity School Emerson whose tragedies surpassed Brownings faced the
