AbstractIn an effort to effectively portray gender roles and marriage I have selected the short stories The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by Mr James Thurber and The Story of the Hour by Ms Kate Chopin Both of the previously mentioned short stories share a mutual subject ie gender roles within a marriage with each foremost character having their own opinions about how gender roles should play-out based on society they were apart of Not only this but both leading characters felt as though they had became prisoners within their marriages and even then divorce was not an option they could have considered because of societal standards of their era The story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was transcribed in 1937 with leading character being an elderly male who frequently drives his wife into town for weekly shopping and salon visits While The Story of an Hour was transcribed in the year 1894 with the leading character being Louise Mallard who believes that with time she will be freed from the death of her husbandThe Story of the Hour is based on a rather very important hour for main character Mrs Louise Mallard who experiences for what seemed an eternity freedom The Secret Life of Walter Mitty focuses on a retired male Walter who seemingly has nothing better to do than to run errands with his wife Walter often times daydream about the life he never had and wishes he did This story concentrates on the reality vs fantasy of Walter and his burning desire to escape lifes routine which is also evident in the case of Mrs Mallard in The Story of the Hour the desire for individuality According to Clugston 2010 The Story of the Hour covers a sole hour of Mrs Mallards existence that is from the moment it was revealed that her husband had passed to the unexpected moment that he revives While her husband is away at
