1 Slavery forms a very integral part in the American history It was one that came to be the foundation of the relationship amid the black and the White Americans Prior to the American Revolution slavery was rampant Nonetheless a wide array of accounts that describe the events which transpired during this time emerged A majority of the writers largely the African Americans have written various works of literature on their slavery experiences Amongst these writers are Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass who wrote narratives that indicated their slavery experiences During the time that they wrote their account poetry and narratives were the main form of writing Gates 12 The main roles of the accounts were to draw attention to the atrocities related to slavery and advocated for its full abolition The purpose of this paper is to compare both accounts discussing their experiences as slaves2 The narrative by Harriet Jacob focused on the atrocities of slavery She has been able to appeal to the emotions of the readers through narrating the effects of slavery to the whole African American society and more so on women On the other hand Douglas concentrates on manhood and freedom As a slave and a man he feels that he was disrespected and was searching for a way that he could emancipate himself Moreover his narrative has been targeted to the general audience
