Vampires everyone has heard of them From the award winning Twilight series to TV shows such as True Blood vampires have become a nationwide phenomenon but how do they compare to Bram Stokers Dracula Written in 1897 Dracula quickly gained popularity and later became a renowned classic While some may believe that Bram Stoker would be devastated by the portrayal of vampire lore today both Dracula and modern depictions of vampires have their meritsWhile in modern vampire portrayals vampires are seen as inhumanly attractive this was not the case in earlier vampire lore Count Dracula is described as a tall old man clean shaven save for a long white mustache and clad in black from head to foot without a single speck of color about him anywhere Dracula pg42 He is normal in appearance not standing out from the crowd whereas vampires in Twilight tend to be more conspicuous Every one of them was chalky pale They all had very dark eyes despite the range in their hairwere all devastatingly inhumanly beautiful Twilight pgs 18-19 Bram Stoker wants his character to look as humanly as possible to illustrate how even the most ordinary of people can be monsters while in Twilight it is evident the difference between human and vampire The eyes are the window to the soul they can show emotions and thoughts Vampires are not the exception to this rule Edwards eyes in Twilight change color according to his hunger They can turn red to amber to black in a matter of days the flat black color of his eyestoday his eyes were a completely different color a strange ocher Twilight pg46 While Count Draculas mannerisms would define him as a statue fixed into stone his eyes cannot help to convey the emotions he feels when exposed to blood I saw that the cut had bled a little and the blood was trickling over my chinWhen the Count saw my face his eyes
