Matthew Fox once said Beauty saves Beauty heals Beauty motivates Beauty unites Beauty returns us to our origins and here lies the ultimate act of saving of healing of overcoming dualism Toni Morrison in The Bluest Eye Welcome address by Karl Paulnack and convocation of beauty all depict beauty in different ways Although they have many views of beauty they all conclude two the things about beauty beauty is an essential part of living and everyone sees beauty differently In the welcome address by Karl Paulnack his one true beauty is music Karl Paulnack talks about a French composer Oliver Messiaen in 1940 Messiaen was 31 years old when France entered the war against Nazi Germany and the worse happened on June of 1940 he was captured and put into a concentration camp Although he was lucky to find sympathetic guards who gave him paper and a place to compose From what we know of the concentration camps why would anyone waste their time and energy playing and writing music when trying to stay alive was hard enough There could only be one possible conclusion art must be somehow essential to life He mentions in his address that Art is part of survival art is part of the human spirit an unquenchable expression of who we are Art is one of the ways in which we say I am alive and my life has meaning During the convocation there was a similar spirit of beauty as they talked about it They mentioned to forms of beauty Art and Math The beauty in an artist is its work but more important its the process it takes in creating that beautiful sculpture or painting The discipline the creativity and the time is took to make that piece makes its true beauty As well as for Math a math professors beauty is the beauty in solving a problem that no one has its the steps the letters
