Some tasks challenging to human are easy for computers to solve while some tasks difficult for computers are trivial to human Instead of solely improving humans skills or software researchers channeled human brainpower using computer games to solve problems challenging both computers and human The proposed dissertation extends this research by integrating crowd into computer simulation to solve open-ended tasks which is referred to as crowd-based simulation Two of the important computer simulation are evolutionary computing and agent-based models which are used for the optimal solution searching and social phenomena explaining However they are incapable of solving problems in need of higher representations Meanwhile web technologies make it possible to coordinate the crowd in a search for creative solutions Therefore the goal of this research is to embed crowd into the simulation approaches to solve two important issues in management innovation and organization design The first test of crowd-based simulation is on genetic algorithms one of widely well known evolutionary computing A sequential combination system is built to organize the crowd with genetic algorithms to generate creative designs This sequential combination system is a variant on a human based genetic algorithm through which the crowd participates in an iterative process of design evaluation and combination The system was used to design chairs and clocks and demonstrated its effectiveness Further tests will be on 3D design and organization process design The second test of crowd-based simulation is on agent-based simulation A classical social simulation Schellings segregation model will be rerun with crowd functioning as agents And an organization design problem will be simulated with crowd The potential contribution of this work is pointing a new way to conduct social science how crowds can be integrated into traditional research approaches to solve challenging tasks Practically if the crowd-based computation works it will provide a way of creatively solving problems in a number of different domains
