Tom Hubsch Eng 102 Mr Thomason Confusion and Reason A Closed Reading of Hamlet Act III scene 1 lines 56-89 Halfway into Act 3 scene 1 Hamlet enters speaking thoughtfully and agonizingly to himself about whether to commit suicide The To be or not to be speech in the play portrays Hamlet as confused indecisive and an over thinker This is why Hamlet seems very unsure of himself and often wavers between two extremes confusion and reason In the soliloquy he simply contemplates death He contemplates over whether he should commit suicide or seek revenge for his fathers death Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them 57-60 From his analysis over life and death he comes to the conclusion that he would rather live and seek revenge for his fathers death than die He is confused about whether to live and suffer or die and end the suffering He is uncertain whether he should endure these pains that he feels are synonymous with life The whips and scorn of time Thoppressors wrong the proud mans contumely The pangs of disprize love the laws delay The insolence of office and the spurns That patient merit of thunworthy takes 71-75 In the soliloquy Hamlet is also very indecisive about the same situation Everything in his speech seems as though death would be a better choice but the only thing keeping him from death is what lies behind it The dread of something after death The undiscovered country from whose bourn No traveler returns puzzles the will 79-81 Choose death and all his heartaches would end He would not have to worry about Claudius Gertrude or any other aspect of his life that bothers or causes him stress Hamlet is scarred of what he does not know He is scarred of what
