At the mention of coral reefs tropical islands start to come to mind aswell as large growing of rocks under the ocean however coral reefs areactually one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and have acollection of many biological communities Contrary to popular belief coral reefs are not abiotic but in fact theyare made up of corals which are tiny animals that belong to theCnidarian group Coral reefs cannot survive in any type of liquidenvironment they require very specific requirement s such as shallowclear water that light can penetrate They also require tropical orsub-tropical temperatures This type of environment is required becausethe zooxanthellae the plant like algae that lives inside the coralpolyps requires photosynthesis to make food that is then shared withthe coral Without these requirements coral reefs would not exist andneither would twenty percent of the underwater marine populationCoral Reefs do not only exist in one type There are in fact threedifferent types of coral reefs The first are the Fringing Reefs Theseare the most common type of reefs and they position themselves toproject seaward The second type of coral reef is the Barrier ReefsThese reefs live on platforms separated from the adjacent land by alagoon The third type of reef is the Atoll reef This reef rests on thetop of submerged volcanoes Within these reefs exist almost twenty fivepercent off all marine life including fish turtles sharks eelscrabs shrimps urchins sponges and algae Coral reefs are not only one of the oceans most popular residences butalso are a major service to human beings They can only survive in veryspecific ranges of temperature salinity water clarities and otherchemical and water quality characteristics ergo they are spectacularwater indicators Reefs are a way for fishermen to eat and earn aliving Coral reefs are beautiful to look at and tourists come from allover the world to see them In this way coral reefs become touristsattraction and boost economies Coral reefs are able to
