This Star of England In A Play With Such A Dominating Central Character How Does Shakespeare Create A Variety of Viewpoints and Interests Shakespeares Henry has been described as his ideal man of action Indeed considering Henrys prominence within the play it can be easy for us to neglect the large and diverse supporting cast In fact in many ways it may be more prudent to look at the scenes do not involve Henry for interest The many varied opinions expressed about Henry both in his company and otherwise reveal to us much about the man A particularly recurring interest in the play is that of religion We are introduced to this very early on in the story The Archbishop of Canterbury and Bishop of Ely tell of Henrys reformation from wildness to being a true lover of the Holy Church I find this to be an interesting area of the play because although so often Henry speaks of G-d he clashes with and contradicts his words at numerous points in the story He clearly believes that he is acting upon G-ds will when dealing with the traitors within his ranks he says that G-d hath so graciously brought to light This dangerous treason lurking our way IIiii185 Henry commits many dubious acts morally at least whilst in France and not always to his enemies One of his men Bardolph has been caught stealing Fluellen reveals to Henry that Bardolph his old drinking friend is like to be executed for robbing a church IIIiv103 Although it was customary at the time to punish thieves very harshly it is implicitly suggested that Bardolph is only being executed because it was in a church Stealing however is stealing and there should be little relevance to where the act was committed It seems paradoxical that Henry attempts to prove his love for a Christian forgiving G-d by executing someone whom may otherwise have
