Hi my name is Natashia Bauer expert eyewitness to Case 430 Iam here to give my testimony in the form of an opinion givenmy knowledge skillexperience training and education Thevictim was found in woods assuming not many people travel outthrough these woods we are given a smaller suspect pool Whileinvestigating the crime-scene detectives found two unknownhairs one hair from the victim and two hairs were collectedfrom the narrowed down two suspects all considered to be classevidence Based on evidence collected and the data we haveobtained Suspect 2 has been our only match-- Image graphics1--httpwww2fbigovhqlabfscbackissujan2004researchimagesfig01gifScientist can identify 6 different types of hair on a personsbody including head hair hair from the eyebrow or eyelashesbeard or mustachehair underarm hair auxiliary or other bodyhair and pubic hair All types are considered class evidencebecause it connects an individual or thing to a certain groupEach type of hair is individualized by the distinct medullacross-section and tip type of that strand The process ofobserving the parts of hair typically depends on a comparisonmicroscope which allows side-by-side comparison of samplesThings we look for while observing the hair evidence are themacroscopic characteristics such as thelength color andcurliness then we look at the microscopic characteristicsincluding the pattern of the medulla the measure of themedullary index pigmentation of the cortex and the types ofscales on the cuticle The cortex is the region of the hairlocated outside of the medulla containing melanin granuleswhich are bits of pigment and is made up mostly of a proteinKeratin The Cuticle is the tough outer covering of a haircomposed of overlapping scales Also the hair follicle is theroot or base growing and consist of DNA and living cells Lastthe medulla is the center core of the hair fiber In some caseswe use Neutron Activation Analysis which is a method thatallows us to determine the composition and elements in thesample Hair goes through 3 stages in order of Anegen Catagenand Telegen The Anegen Stage is the active growth stage ofhair and
