Criminal Law and How it Provides Social Control Social control is the use of sanctions and rewards available through a group to influence and shape the behavior of individual members of that group Social control is a primary concern of social groups and communities and it is the interest that human groups hold in the exercise of social control that leads to the creation of both criminal and civil statutes The primary purpose of the criminal law is to control the behavior of people within its jurisdiction Criminal Law is not held responsible for all social control The majority is related to the community itself The community has the power to regulate the behavior of its residents through the influences of community institutions such as schools and various hospitals People must learn the universal norms and have a set of distinct moral values in order for a peaceful atmosphere to exist within a society There are many different factors that we must look at to maintain social control and to have it run as smooth as possible These factors and control measures regarding how criminal law provides social control and why sometimes it doesnt is going to be discussed throughout this paper First of all you must be able to explain social behavior in general Social behavior has two distinct but consistent aspects The first aspect is to be aware of the statistical distribution of the behavior in time and in space and from which predictive statements about the unknown statistical distributions that must also be derived The second aspect to explain social behavior is that there must be a statement that identifies at least by implication that the process by which individuals come to exhibit the behavior in question and from which can be derived predictive statements about the behaviors of the individuals Cressey 1960 47 One particular question which arises quite frequently is with what factors
