The article Indys Neglect of its Parks is Shameful by Dan Carpenter discusses the need for Indianapolis to spend more time fixing up and repairing the local parks in order to give residents a place to exercise Although Carpenter may be right about the fact Indianapolis has lower quality parks especially when comparing them to other parks amongst cities ranked in the top 50 largest cities his reasoning to improve the parks has many unquestionable flawsThe article focuses on appealing to the emotions of the audience by using pathos a type of rhetorical mechanism The audience of this article is certainly those living in or around the Indianapolis area In his article Carpenter focuses on placing the blame on the lack of parks saying it is the reason why residents do not exercise regularly Carpenter 2013 stated weve earned our reputation as one of the unhealthiest cities and states in the nation which was undeniably used as a way to create anger in the audience towards the state and the lack of caring the state appears to have But Carpenter never provides any appropriate information to back up his arguments causing him to be viewed as unreliable and not effective in his argumental strategies Although emotions are a main part of the article the traces of logos that exist could help build on the emotions by providing data and statistics that hurts Indianas reputation only if it applied to what was being argued though And in Carpenters case it didnt He did however provide information about the average amount of money a typical resident spends per year on the parks This information may be useful if the average person knew how to apply the information or if the information was not just piled into a paragraph full of other statistical data Although pathos is an effective way to appeal to the audience Dan Carpenter provokes anger towards an ineffective reasoning which then cancels any effectiveness
