A common misconception is that dance teams are a club and not a sport A club is defined as a group of people organized for a common purpose whereas a sport is defined as an active pastime or recreation The definition of a sport is a much better definition for dance teams everywhere Some people that hold the opinion that dance team is a club include high schools and colleges across the United States They feel that dance team is just something for fun and to watch at different sporting events High schools and colleges feel that dance teams are inferior to other sports so they call them clubs If you search for dance teams they are recognized as a club instead of a competitive sport Dancers work just as hard as any other athlete and if cheerleading can now be called a sport then there is nothing to stop dance teams from being one Across the country dance teams compete on many levels including regional state and national competitions These competitions earn members ribbons medals trophies and the chance to have an all-star position Competing in these events requires long hours of practice and dedication Like many sports dance teams practice hard and put themselves at risk for serious injury Dancers practice many days a week for long periods at a time Most learn at least eight to ten routines a year for dance team Unlike other sports that claim to be harder dance teams must memorize each new routine for performing later on Dancers must know all routines to perform often in front of large groups of people Also with practices and performances dancers have a high risk of injuring themselves The more years spent dancing the greater the risk of a serious injury Injuries can range from a temporary sprain to a permanent injury Many dancers end their careers with bad knees and ankles from the many strenuous hours
