yellow journalism100496 10922 AMJoseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst emerged in the late nineteenth as great journalistbusinessmen Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearsts cutthroat competition to coner the newspaper market and to control the public with provocative news profoundly changed the way the United States would have conducted foreign policy between the years 1895 and 1898 These two men had such a strong hold on American society that they forced an unjustifiable war onto us The pattern of modern journalism was established by Joseph Pulitzer Born in Hungary in 1847 Pulitzer arrived in the United States in 1864 to fight with the union army After the Civil War penniless young immigrant journeyed to St Louis where by virtue of his intelligence and hard work he soon became not only a successful reporter but also a lawyer and crusading politician After serving in the Missouri legislature and working as a reporter on the St Louis Post and the Westliche Post a leading Midwestern German newspaper Pulitzer purchased in 1876 the Post and the St Louis Dispatch consolidating them into the Post Dispatch This venture was such a success that the young publisher turned his attention to the world of New York journalism In 1883 he purchased the New York World from the financier Jay Gould and in 1887 he established the Evening World It was with the World that Pulitzer set a pattern for the new journalism Interesting news stories were presented in a sensational manner The World led crusades such as collecting funds to build the pedestals for the Statue of Liberty as well as expose of the white slave traffic the Louisiana lottery the ill treatment of the immigrants to Ellis Island and the questionable activities of many large industrial concerns Stunts too were part of the new journalism The World for example sponsored a trip around the world by Nellie Bly who broke the record of the fictitious Phileas Fogg of Around the
