Three and a half football fields long 1092 feet to be exact Sixteen stories high above the waterline and from the flight deck there are five stories The Ikes flight decks width is 252 feet an area of four point five acres four aircraft catapults for launching planes also four arresting gears to aide in landings I arrived on the pier to board my new ship September 1978 even though I knew it was a carrier had no idea the size of this vessel I walked twenty minutes too amidships to board and walked up two flights of stairesAlong my walk I observed that two hanger bay doors were open Aircrafts were being rearranged in the hangers by yellow aircraft trucks forklifts were also moving material and supplies to different sections of the hangers Men moved about the hangers in a fast pace pointing and shouting different instruction to each other Upon boarding I smelled aircraft fuel forklift fumes and fresh paint The hanger bay deck had a newly applied non-skid coating that shined and the hanger bay walls also looked of a fresh coat of paint As I entered the ship crew area waxed floors looked as if I were walking on water the brass shined and the stainless steel ladders hand rails appeared like a shiny new nickel Along with being the largest and the newest carrier Ike was the fastestOfficially the Ike could exceed 30 knots unofficially 60 knots plus The Ike has two nuclear reactors propulsion units that did not need to refuel for years At top speeds above 40 knots the ship and its contents would shake at 60 knots plus the contents rattle Planes equipment and your teeth At top speeds it was if you could image you a walking on a skate board that was rolling on pebbles On our battle group war games the Ike would out run the group Hide and try to destroy the
