With every newborn baby there is about 1 in 150 babies is born with a chromosomal abnormality American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists 2001 2005 Carey 2003 Chromosomal Abnormalities characterize the genetic process and some involve whole chromosomes that do not separate properly during meiosis Santrock 2011 p 61 Meiosis is a type of cell division that forms the egg and sperm also known as gametes Chromosomal Abnormalities are disorders affected by errors in the number or structure of chromosomes Goldstein Morewitz 2011 There are different types of Abnormalities consisting of Chromosomal Abnormalities Sex-Linked Chromosomal and Gene-Linked Abnormalities There are many examples of chromosomal abnormalities the most common examples involve Down Syndrome and abnormalities of the sex chromosomes Sex-Linked Chromosomal Abnormalities are present when a newborn has either an X or Y chromosome or two X chromosomes The most common sex-linked chromosomal abnormalities involve the presences of an extra chromosome either an X or Y or the absence of one X chromosome in females Santrock 2011 A couple of examples of sex-linked chromosomal abnormalities are Klinefelter Syndrome and Turner Syndrome Each one of these abnormalities has different effects upon the individual For example Klinefelter Syndrome is the result of a male having an extra X chromosome making them XXY instead of XY Santrock 2011 p 62 For the male with Klinefelter Syndrome the characteristics such as overweight and being taller than the father and or other male siblings that may result from this are not common meaning many men dont know they have an extra chromosome Most individuals with Klinefelter Syndrome do experience delayed speech development and demonstrate an array of motor problems Goldstein Morewitz 2011 So with taking that into consideration these individuals with Klinefelter Syndrome when they do go to school teachers need to be aware of how to help them learn and be successful individually but not only that be their mentor When Individuals with Chromosomal and Sex-Linked Abnormalities
