Determination You cant cage a free spirit Andy was determined to live a normal life while in prison Andys determination was very influential to his fellow inmates and to his own life It seemed at times that Andy had a sort of force field around him and that nothing around him could affect him unless he wanted it to Andys determination to live a normal life and to be a free man was very influential to his fellow inmates To others Andy seemed to be unaffected by prison life He always kept his chin up with the quote start living or start dying Even prison could not take away his hobbies and interests for he kept up his geology hobby by creating chess pieces out of stone he found in the prison courtyard He also wrote the government to get books for the library and once the books arrived he led the library He even held a similar job in prison that he had on the outside in accounting Andy was determined to be a free man After finding that the concrete was deteriorating after many years exposed to the elements he began planning his escape For 19 long years he tunneled his way to freedom Even a 500-yard sewage pipe did not stop him from obtaining what he had set his mind on Because of the special privileges Andy had with the warden he knew bank account numbers in which he could become a rather wealthy man without much work It was Andys determination and unfaltering will that inspired hope in many other inmates During what should have been hard labor Andy made a deal with the warden to allow his fellow inmates to have beer for the final day of work One hardened criminal at Shawshank by the name of Red was particularly changed by Andys behavior After providing Andy with a rock hammer they became rather close friends
