To what extent is the division between qual and quan research an artificial oneThere is a clear distinction between qualitative and quantitative research where by quantitative research tends to involve numerical data While qualitative research tends to use more of a collection of a descriptive more in depth type of data This is because quantitative data uses methods such as surveys either through random stratified or specific sampling while qualitative data uses methods such as interviews structured or semi structured As the name suggests the results of quantitative research are quantified counted where as in qualitative research are inspected for quality of answers When the quantitative research is being conducted the researcher is normally not present on the other hand when qualitative research is being carried out the researcher normally is the one carrying out the interview therefore presentOther differences are that quantitative data is theory testing structured hard reliable nature of data done so on a macro scale and is set in artificial settings Whereas qualitative data is theory emergent unstructured rich deep nature of data done so on a micro scale and is usually collected in a natural setting However taking into account all of these differences there are some similarities Firstly both are concerned with data reduction they both collect a large amount of data Therefore by reducing the amount of data to begin to make sense of it In quantitative data it takes the form of statistical analysis for example the mean median and mode are drawn out to make sense of the data Where as in qualitative research concepts are developed out of the rich data collectedAnother similarity is that both are concerned with answering research questions Even though the nature of the kinds of research questions are different Where by in quantitative research the questions are closed but in qualitative they are usually open ended Both ultimately use questions to carry out researchOnce more another similarity is that
